Relax. This post is NOT about what you think…. 🙂
Our two girls have both gone through stages where they like to come to our beds in the middle of the night to sleep with us. I have often jokingly said that I never know who I wake up beside in the morning. 🙂 Taylor, our older one has out grown this habit, and now it’s MJ’s turn. At times, it gets annoying, especially on nights where I struggle to fall asleep, only to be waken up when she crawls into our bed, and ended up with her foot over my nose, or something.
This morning, I woke up with MJ beside me.
“Good morning MJ!”
“Good morning Daddy!!” and she snuggled up closer to me.
“I love you MJ…”
“I love you Daddy…”
And then, for some reason I asked this question: “MJ, do you know what it means to love someone?”
MJ thought seriously for a minute, and then she looked at me and said, “Well, when you love someone, you want to sleep with them…”
That was another one of those moments where time seem to stand still, to let you slowly absorb a timeless piece of wisdom that has just been imparted to you..Sometimes, we forget that our kids have very limited ways to express their love to us. They can’t drive to the mall to buy a card for you on Father’s Day. They don’t have the money to order flowers to be sent to your office on your birthday. Their young vocabulary only gives them so many words to work with when they try to speak with you.
And when it comes to expressing something as profound as love, they can only resort to the small things they can do within their powers…such as crawling into your bed, to snuggle up beside you (and yes, in the process waking you up in the middle of the night 🙂 . What I want to dismiss as an annoying habit, may be one of the very few things that MJ knows how to do to show me she loves me.
As I have often said, fatherhood is the single most humbling thing I have ever done in life.
Now, please excuse me as I need get MJ’s foot out of Anna’s nose before she suffocates.
