Today…

June 29, 2010

Today I woke up a little late, and Anna and Taylor was already moving in full speed through the morning routine.

“Daddy, should I wear shorts or pants today?”

Ugh.  Decisions, descisions.

As I slowly get up to speed, I thought to myself, “As long as there are choices and decisions to be made, I might as well be proactive about it.”  So, I started this mental list in the shower:  (by the way, history has shown repeatedlthat the shower, of all places, is the place where creative thoughts flow most freely…)

Today, I will be kind to others.  Realizing that beneath the smooth exterior, all of us are fighting battles of our own that no one knows about.

Today, I will go out of my way to appreciate people.   I will say “thank you”.   Many of us have not been thanked for a long time.

Today, rather than waiting to be inspired, I will seek to inspire others.  I will seek to encourage people to try a new perspective. To look a little higher, a little further, a little deeper.

Today, I will create.  I will write.  I will add another another line to the story of redemption that I am a part of.

Today, I will finish writing my song. (wait, that’s what I said yesterday…)

And if I manage to do even a portion of all this, it will be a good day :-)

You’ve got a friend in me
You’ve got a friend in me
When the road looks rough ahead
And you’re miles and miles
From your nice warm bed
Just remember what your old pal said
Boy, you’ve got a friend in me

Tonight we took Taylor to see her first movie…Toy Story 3, in 3D!!  She had such a great time!  With the 3D glasses on, I actually saw her reach her hand out towards the screen several times during the movie to touch the characters….a sure sign that the 3D technology works! :-)

You’ve got troubles, well I’ve got ‘em too
There isn’t anything I wouldn’t do for you
We stick together and we see it through
You’ve got a friend in me

Anna and I had a wonderful time seeing her so thrilled.   At times we were laughing harder at her reaction than what was going on in the movie. :-)   But as the “friendship” theme of the movie develops, and the familiar theme song plays (you’ve got a friend in me), both of us started tearing up…deep wounds do not heal easily.  Especially those inflicted by “friends”.

But if there is one thing we have learned over the past few years, it is not to take friendship for granted.  So while we lament the loss of people we thought were “friends”, we celebrate the fact that there are those who have proven their friendship during the most difficult days of our lives.  If it is true that in life,  ”to those who had been given much, much will be demanded”, one of our “core mission” the rest of our lives is to give back friendship.   To live our lives to say to others in our lives, “You’ve got a friend in me.”

Some other folks might be
A little bit smarter than I am
Bigger and stronger too
Maybe
But none of them will ever love you the way I do
It’s me and you
And as the years go by
Boys, our friendship will never die
You’re gonna see
It’s our destiny
You’ve got a friend in me

An open letter to Taylor’s birth mother…

June 11, 2010

Hello… This has to be the most awkward letter I have ever written in my life.  Partly because we have never met each other, and we will never meet. Also partly because in all likelihood, you will never read this letter. But, today is a special day and I just felt like I should write [...]

Another satisfying gig!

June 10, 2010

A couple of nights ago I went and spoke/sang at  the volunteer appreciation night for Epilepsy of York Region.  Having my office next door to them for about a year gave me a first hand look at the wonderful work that they do.  So when my phone rang and the invitation came, I jumped on it [...]
